Antiperspirants vs Deodorants

There has been a lot of discussion over Antiperspirants and the potential health risks. The rise of breast cancer in women and men in the United States definitely has people concerned.

An antiperspirant works by blocking the sweat ducts, preventing sweat from reaching the skin’s surface. Aluminum (whether combined with chloride or zirconium) is soluble as long as the formulation is acidic. Once applied to the skin, contact with sweat raises the pH, causing the complex to precipitate out and plug the glandular opening.

Deodorants address the Bromhidrosis or body odor. What you actually smell is not the sweat but the bacteria that multiply considerably in the presence of moisture. While conventional deodorants do not contain aluminum, they are far from organic or natural.

There is a very interesting study by Dr Kris McGrath on the connection between shaving, the use of antiperspirants and breast cancer. His theory is that breast cancer is related to lifestyle. The article is very informative with lots of detailed information. You can read the CBS article on him and his study at: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/12/05/eveningnews/main1098995.shtml
